At St Matthias Park students’ progress in literacy is a very high priority. The skills of reading, writing and communicating effectively are essential if students’ are to make the most of life’s opportunities.
If we are to enable our students to become the citizens of the future, we must do all we can to develop their literacy sufficiently well for them to not only access the English curriculum but be able to access all areas of school and life.
To this end, students’ literacy is assessed during the induction period and any areas of weakness are identified. A literacy programme is developed to best meet these needs and this can result in a daily literacy session with specialist support. For some students though, their literacy skills can be enhanced through the English curriculum and the advantage of being taught in small teaching groups.
Depending on the length of stay and ability, students will be able to achieve an English qualification through Edexcel in Functional Skills (KS3&4 -Entry levels 1, 2, 3 and Levels 1, 2) or at KS4 GCSE through WJEC (A* to G).
